We use this latter assertion advisedly as more especially relating to writings done with the brush or the reed, or some other kind of pen, on papyrus, linen, skins or parchment, and even on pottery and stone, as against engravings or cuttings, incised or in relief, on wood and rocks, stones or other hard material, or incised work on fresh terra cotta clay afterwards baked by fire into hard pottery, such as are the usual cuneiform tablets found in Mesopotamia.
